After an accident, insurance is typically your safety net for handling any extra expenses you might face, from medical treatment to vehicle repairs. However, sometimes disputes with your insurance company can come to the surface, especially if you’re denied coverage.
While not every disagreement you have with your insurance company means they’re explicitly being dishonest, insurance companies have certainly treated individuals wrongly in the past in order to avoid paying the full amount for a claim.
Here are three misleading ways that insurance may try to deny your claim:
1. Discourage You From Seeking Medical Care
Insurance companies will sometimes discourage you from seeking medical attention, even if you really need it. This way, they can avoid paying for your medical bills before potentially long-term effects set in. It’s important to always seek medical attention after an accident regardless of if you think your injuries are serious or not.
2. Make You Record a Statement Immediately
According to Colorado state law, you have 15 days after an accident to provide a recorded statement to your insurance company. Take that time to fully assess your injuries and speak with an attorney. Some insurance companies may try to get you on the record before you’ve had a chance to understand your case in full.
3. Fail to Fully Explain Your Coverage
When purchasing insurance, many people select a plan with the minimum amount of coverage required. While these policies are legal, in the case of a serious accident they may not cover all of your expenses. Sometimes insurance companies may steer you towards a cheap monthly payment rather than comprehensive coverage that will actually help in case of an accident.
Insurance disputes are more common than you may think, but the attorneys at Colorado’s Babcock Law Firm are prepared to help. Our firm found, R. Mack Babcock, started his legal career by working for a midsize insurance defense firm that defended hundreds of injury claims for several large insurance companies. Now, he fights on behalf of individuals not corporations, and he’s very familiar with the approach insurance companies take toward accident victims.
